Steelers Mock Draft: Unexpected talent falls to the Steelers
By Andrew Falce
Round 2
Grant Delpit, S, LSU
While this ended up being a tough choice due to the other two options I was left with, I felt like Grant Delpit was the best player out of the three. He looked like a sure-fire top 15 pick a year ago, but he had a down year last year causing his stock to tumble. As well, small school prospects like Kyle Dugger and Jeremy Chinn have seen their stock shoot up recently, and rumor has it they have a shot at going before Delpit.
Delpit has the versatility to play both FS and SS as well as coming up and playing in the box. While the Steelers have invested heavily in the secondary these past few years, adding Delpit will give this team one of the best in the NFL. As well, the #3 S usually sees playing time in sub packages, giving him an instant way to contribute his rookie year.
His role in his rookie year would likely see him step in as SS on dime packages. Terrell Edmunds, the starter, would move to the box and play closer to the line of scrimmage, something that would help cover up his weaknesses in coverage. Eventually, he would be expected to compete with Edmunds for the starting SS spot. While a third player at the position isn’t the biggest need, Delpit was too hard to pass on.
