The Steelers rounded out the 2020 NFL draft by selecting six players with promise
No first-round pick, no Pro Days, and no individual visit at the team facility. To say that the 2020 NFL draft was unique would be an understatement. It was unprecedented. Nonetheless, the Steelers were able to add six players to the roster.
I’m sure the aforementioned six players have aspirations of becoming starters, Pro Bowlers, All-Pros, and Hall of Famers. We know these goals are not always realistic, but if an NFL player does not have those goals, he probably won’t make the team.
When I said that the Steelers selected players with promise, what I mean by that is this: The essence of the draft is selecting an unknown commodity and hopefully transforming that unknown commodity into a known commodity.
This is where coaching comes into play. Many draftees are nothing but raw material that will have to be cultivated and molded into players whom the organization expected to get when they were drafted. Sometimes it works out; sometimes it doesn’t work out.
For the 2020 Steelers, the expectation, I assume, is that the aforementioned six players will be able to contribute in some form or fashion, each to his own abilities. Will they all make the team? Maybe; maybe not. Will they all be positive contributors to our efforts? Maybe; maybe not.
Suffice to say, if any of them or all of them make the team, they will be expected to perform at a high level, which is the Steelers way.
