Terrell Edmunds

Terrell Edmunds was a surprise pick in the first round of the 2018 draft, but he has made the quick transition into a starting SS. While he has played ok, he has yet to take his game to the next level, leaving many wondering if he will ever be the dynamic player the Steelers had hoped for. While at this point Edmunds is likely close to his ceiling, he can and should see his best season as a Steeler this year.

At this point, the training wheels are off and he needs to find a way to produce. While he is a good run stopper and tackler, he has major deficiencies in coverage leading to his early struggles. This means the Steelers need to find more creative ways to use him in 2020 as opposed to just playing deep.

What makes the most sense is making him more of a box defender, playing closer to the line so he isn’t exposed deep in coverage. His athleticism and physical nature should shine there. That would leave SS a question mark due to the lack of depth. The Steelers may have to get creative and plug a player like Cameron Sutton in to play deeper.

Even if the Steelers continue to use him more traditionally, he’ll have a full season with Minkah Fitzpatrick to play next to. This should lead to more consistency from him since his running mate won’t be changing constantly. It isn’t unthinkable, especially if he plays closer to the line, to put up around 100 tackles. He needs to add a few interceptions to truly make this his breakout year.
