JuJu Smith-Schuster

Smith-Schuster had a ton of hype in 2019 and did not live up to it. He was being compared to players like Odell Beckham Jr., but 2019 was a down year for JuJu.

For one, he had an injury down the stretch which made him admittedly missed by this team. He also had down stats in 2019.

According to Pro Football Reference, JuJu Smith-Schuster had only 552 receiving yards after posting 1426 as an NFL sophomore. This was a big disappointment.

You could blame some of this on the quarterback situation. Ben Roethlisberger got hurt, then Mason Rudolph had a concussion and Devlin Hodges was streaky.

JuJu has a lot to prove in 2020 after being an overhyped player in 2019. His biggest proof will have to be whether 2019 was due to bad quarterback play or just plain overhyped.

My view is that JuJu Smith-Schuster is an overhyped receiver. He should have provided more for Mason Rudolph and Devlin Hodges. I think one of the problems is that JuJu likes to party and has a knack for publicity but he needs to remember that he is a football player first.

This is a problem for Pittsburgh Steelers receivers is that they can produce on the field, but love the attention to a point of distraction off the field. There is no better example of this than Antonio Brown. But there have been others like Plaxico Burress and off-the-field concerns also derailed Santonio Holmes’ career.

I put JuJu Smith-Schuster in the overrated category but if he can get back to focusing on football, he can be a top free agent in 2021 and earn a big contract. At this point, I think this might be JuJu Smith-Schuster’s last year in the Black & Gold.
