Cameron Sutton
Cam Sutton has not played a lot in his young career but, when he has, he has shown up big time on the field. He has filled in at slot corner and on the outside a few times since being drafted in 2017 but hasn’t quite grabbed hold of a more prominent role in the defense.
Sutton came from the University of Tennessee in 2017. After being regarded as a potential future first-rounder early in his collegiate career, he stayed for his senior season in 2016.
A broken ankle threw a wrench in his senior season but, he still managed to play in seven games. His injury played a part in him slipping to the third round of the 2017 draft.
He wasn’t expected to come in and play right away and an injury made that a reality. He was placed on IR in 2017 but returned later in the year but played limited snaps.
The 2018 season let us see more of Sutton and his natural athleticism and fluidity. He played in 15 games and started one as he took over late in the season for a struggling Mike Hilton.
After his end to 2018, it was thought he would transition to a bigger role on defense in 2019 but that would not be the case. With the trade for Minkah Fitzpatrick and Hilton finding his footing again, Sutton was once again left without a true grip on a consistent role.
In 2020, Sutton should be able to find his way into more playing time. With the lack of depth at safety and Mike Hilton’s impending free agency, he could prove his worth and earn a steady spot in the young and improving Steelers defense.
