Derwin Grey

Last year’s 7th round pick, Derwin Gray had a quiet training camp as he transitioned from OT to IOL. He seemed ready to make a roster push this offseason due to his position versatility, but the lack of a training camp has made those odds even worse. Gray looked like he was in line to push for a backup spot, but the Steelers may opt to keep more experienced lineman and have the less experienced ones on the practice squad.

The issue is the Steelers have a lot of intriguing prospects on the offensive line. Former defender Jarron Jones is looking to carve out a role on the offense, while a player like J.C. Hassenauer is center-specific and spent time with the Steelers last year. There are even rumors that UDFA DE Calvin Taylor may make the shift to OT due to his impressive 6’9 frame.

While Gray has just as good of a shot to make the practice squad as any of the names above, there are certainly a lot of different names that could replace Gray on the practice squad. He certainly can’t disappoint in camp, as that could quickly spell the end of his time on the Steelers roster. A lot is riding on this camp for him, as he could quickly see his NFL career end.
