David DeCastro gives brutally honest description about Steelers offense
By Adam Patrick
The Pittsburgh Steelers offensive guard didn’t hold back.
For anyone who has watched the Pittsburgh Steelers during the past few years with Ben Roethlisberger starting under center, it’s become normal to see the team put up some pretty impressive numbers on the offensive side of the ball.
However, this was not the case for the Steelers in 2019. For the first time since 1998, Pittsburgh ranked lower than 25th in points per game last season and they also finished with the third-fewest yards per matchup in the entire NFL.
To be a player in an offense like the Steelers had last year isn’t a ton of fun. Current Pittsburgh right guard David DeCastro recently spoke about the lack of fun that the offense experienced last season.
The Pittsburgh Steelers had an awful offense in 2019
As he took questions from reporters on Monday, DeCastro didn’t beat around any bushes when it came to expressing his feelings about the Steelers offensive performance last year.
"“Last year sucked. I already forgot about it. It was not fun to play. As an offense, it was pretty terrible. Yeah, you lose confidence, and it just kind of snowballs. It was a pretty tough year.”"
Even though the Pittsburgh guard was blunt when talking about the offense, he didn’t single anyone out or throw any specific players under the bus. DeCastro went on to say that last season’s offensive performance, “falls on everybody,” and that they have, “to be better,” this year.
As tough as his comments might be tough for some current members of the Steelers offense to hear, he’s not even close to being wrong.
Pittsburgh’s offense struggled mightily last season without Roethlisberger as their starter. And it’s not even like the Steelers needed their offense to put up monster numbers since their defense was one of the best in the league last year.
Despite Pittsburgh’s defense playing at a very high level in 2019, it was ultimately the performance of the team’s offense that prevented them from earning a spot in the playoffs.
With Roethlisberger back, most expect the Steelers offense to at least get back to being an average unit this year. But if Pittsburgh has to turn to their backup quarterbacks for a handful of games again, it could end up being another long and boring season for the team’s offense.
