Johnny Unitas to the Colts

Johnny Unitas had a very short stay with his hometown team, the Steelers. He was selected by the Steelers in the 9th round of the 1955 NFL draft but was released before training camp was over. Unitas was picked up by the Baltimore Colts and he went on to have a hall of fame career.

Unitas would go onto win a Super Bowl, win three NFL Championships, three-time league MVP, NFL Man of the Year, 1960’s All-Decade team, selection to the Pro Bowl ten times, and selections to the First-team All-pro five times.

Unitas gained many of those accolades and that was because of the amazing numbers he put up throughout his career as a Colt. His completion percentage was 54.7, 39,768 passing yards, and 287 passing touchdowns. Unitas would play his final season with the San Diego Chargers in 1973, but that was not a good mix as Unitas did not play much. His final season saw him only start four games and total 471 passing yards, three touchdowns to seven interceptions. It was finally time for the 40-year-old gunslinger to hang up the cleats for good.

Unitas was the biggest miss by the Steelers in their history because during the time the Steelers were the laughing stock of the league.
