Brent Alexander

2003 Notable Stats: 85 tackles, 1 sack, 4 INTs

To be honest, Brent Alexander was a name I hadn’t heard before researching him for this list. He was one of the players tasked with helping the defense transition from the Rod Woodson years. Never elite, he was a steady presence in the Steelers secondary, logging four interceptions in each year besides his first with the Steelers. He maintained his consistent play into his age 32 season in 2003.

While not his best year per se, it was on par with the rest of his seasons in the black and gold. While never the ballhawk of an Ed Reed, Alexander was a steady presence deep in the secondary that the team could rely on to make a big play every now and again and make the stop when needed. FS is a position that can be played well by an older veteran, but youth and athleticism typically are the trend for an elite FS.

Alexander would continue his positive and smart play for his final two years as well. Those weren’t with the Steelers, as he signed with the Giants after 2003. The fact that Alexander did so well for so long is nothing short of impressive. The Steelers had a key piece in their secondary locked down by a smart and savvy veteran who delivered quality seasons almost every year.
