Wide receivers
JuJu Smith-Schuster
Diontae Johnson
James Washington
Chase Claypool
Ryan Switzer
The top four players at wide receiver are no surprise to make the roster. JuJu Smith-Schuster, James Washington, and Chase Claypool were each second-round picks over the past few years, and none are anywhere close to losing a roster spot.
Diontae Johnson was the Steelers’ third-round draft choice in 2019, and he was one of the most impressive rookie wide receivers last year – leading all rookies in receptions and all NFL receivers in separation per target, according to Next Gen Stats.
This takes us to Ryan Switzer. Although some analysts would argue that Switzer isn’t a lock heading into the 2020 season. I’m fully convinced he makes this team. Switzer has developed a strong relationship with quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and he can play both offense and contribute as a return man on special teams (albeit not a very efficient one last sesaon).
Considering that Pittsburgh typically likes to roll with 6 receivers. Switzer’s roster spot in 2020 is secure as WR5. If the Steelers keep another, it will likely be Deon Cain who joined the team in Week 11 last season.
