Tight ends

Eric Ebron

Vance McDonald

Any way you slice it, there are really only two tight ends who should be considered definite roster locks for the Steelers in 2020. Eric Ebron was Pittsburgh’s ‘big’ signing of 2020. Though he wasn’t an overly expensive player, Mike Tomlin and his crew hope that Ebron could provide a spark in the passing game this year.

There were some questions about Vance McDonald this offseason and whether or not the Steelers would try to get out of his questionable contract, but we are way beyond that now, and Vance should serve a sizable role in Pittsburgh’s offense this year as both an inline blocker and pass-catcher.

Outside of these two, the role of TE3 is far from being a lock. Zach Gentry is the frontrunner in this department, as the 6’8″ tight end was a fifth-round pick by the Steelers last April. Unfortunately, Gentry has limited athleticism and has looked sloppy in the early going. Things don’t appear to be going much better in year two.

Also in the running for the final tight end spot are Dax Raymond and Kevin Rader. Both should be considered outsiders to make it at this stage in the game.
