Steelers could gain draft picks in the process

Another reason trading Dupree and signing Clowney would be beneficial to Pittsburgh is that the Steelers would gain draft choices in the process. Last year, the Seattle Seahawks made a very similar move with the Houston Texans by trading for a fifth-year player in Clowney.

Though the Seahawks knew that Clowney was essentially a one-year rental, they were willing to give up a 3rd round draft choice to acquire his services.

While Dupree may not be able to fetch the same haul, it’s possible that Pittsburgh could get a 4th round draft choice by trading a player who almost has no chance of re-signing with the team after the 2020 season. But this isn’t the only pick Pittsburgh will receive.

Though Clowney may only want to take a one year deal at this point, having another team poach him with a massive contract in free agency next year will likely leave the Steelers with a 3rd round compensatory pick.

Keeping Dupree will do something similar, but if he doesn’t repeat his performance from 2019, Pittsburgh may just get a day-three compensatory pick in return when he leaves in free agency next year.
