Clowney comes at a similar price

While many fans claim they would choose Dupree because he’s a cheaper option than a player like Jadeveon Clowney, this may not end up being the case at all. It’s true that Clowney was seeking a contract worth $20 million per season earlier this offseason, but that has since changed (thanks partially to the pandemic, I’m sure).

Since then, Clowney has rescinded that statement – claiming that he will take $17 million per year. Compared to Dupree’s franchise tag at $15.828, that’s a difference of just $1.172 million. In NFL terms, that’s pennies.

However, there are many who believe that Clowney won’t even receive this much on a one-year deal and that his cap number could be lower than Dupree’s altogether. Either way, having Dupree or Clowney works out about the same from a financial standpoint for the Steelers.

Bud Dupree is coming off his best year as a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers, but there’s no guarantee he will be able to put up the same kind of numbers in 2020. On the other hand, Jadeveon Clowney is a three-time Pro Bowl player who demands attention on every play. If the Steelers have a chance to make this work, they should pull the trigger.
