DT Dan McCullers

If we’re not on the same page here, then what can we agree on? Though Dan McCullers hasn’t been a busted pick based on the fact that he’s already stuck around for six years in Pittsburgh, what does he offer that another reserve defensive lineman couldn’t do for the team?

Sure, McCullers is a big body that could bull rush the pocket, given enough time, but his style of play was best suited for an NFL game that ceased to exist decades ago. In today’s NFL, McCullers is a defensive liability with his inability to move laterally and a lack of quickness to get after the quarterback.

McCullers is essentially another big body to use in goal-line defense or field goal coverage. However, the big defensive lineman is too slow to use in most areas on special teams.

With just 41 tackles and 2.5 sacks in his first 73 games with the Steelers, it’s safe to assume that Pittsburgh could more than replicate his production with a different defensive tackle. There are younger and more athletic defensive lineman of all shapes and sizes behind McCullers on the depth chart, but somehow, he will probably win a roster spot anyway.
