S Marcus Allen

Last year’s preseason performance by Marcus Allen was one of the worst I had ever witnessed. The 6’2” safety looked incredibly stiff-hipped and couldn’t turn and run with receivers to save his life.

I specifically remember one angle that he took that made me want to rip my hair out. Despite being the last line of defense for the Steelers, Allen stepped up to make the tackle in the open field but didn’t have the lateral agility to take a step to the side and make the play.

This isn’t to say that the third-year safety can’t improve. But this isn’t any different than the player we saw at Penn State a few years ago. Allen was a box safety for the Nittany Lions and wasn’t known for his ability in coverage.

After suiting up just three games for the Steelers in two years, Allen has recorded just two tackles in his career and didn’t record a defensive snap with the team last season. So far, Allen has shown to be a liability on the field with holes in his game. Combine that with the fact that he has very little NFL experience, and you get a completely expendable player.
