TE Zach Gentry

Here’s a player who could be the definition of making the team by default. Yes, Gentry was Pittsburgh’s fifth-round pick from last year, but many thought he would be taken at the tail end of the draft or not at all. According to Three Sigma Athlete, Gentry tested as a just an 8th percentile athlete among tight ends at the NFL Combine.

This comes in addition to being former quarterback convert at Michigan who is still raw at the position. His only real competition this year, Dax Raymond, was recently waived by the Steelers after suffering an injury in practice.

Gentry may be tall (6’8”) but he’s a lumbering tight end who’s average at best as a blocker and stiff as a pass-catcher. He still has time to turn things around, but he isn’t suddenly going to get a lot more athletic. If the Steelers choose to keep three tight ends on their active roster, he will make the team because they have no other viable options.

These five players will have a chance to prove me wrong in 2020, and I hope they do. But as of now, they can be considered players who should not make the Steelers final roster, but will anyway.
