The passing game is gonna bounce back

It might be easy to forget just how great the passing game for the Pittsburgh Steelers was in 2018. After all Ben Roethlisberger led the league in completions(452) and passing yards(5,129). He also ranked 5th in passing touchdowns(34) per ProFootballReference. In 2019 however, the Steelers ranked 26th in completions(315) and 31st in passing yard(2,981). They also tied for 30th in passing touchdowns(18) per ESPN. If the passing game returns to form, the Steelers will be Super Bowl bound.

Ben is back

Obviously losing a future Hall of Fame quarterback to injury in week 2 is going to hurt any team’s passing game. If we compare 2018-2019, the backups in 2019 threw for roughly 58% of the yards Ben was able to accomplish the season before. Furthermore, they threw about 52% of the passing touchdowns Ben threw in 2019. Basically Ben threw for nearly twice as many yards and touchdowns as the Steelers two backups would throw a year later.

Wide Receivers

The Steelers only started 7 games last season with each of their top three wide receivers per Rotowire. This is still a relatively young group and the Steelers were able to add more quality depth at the receiver position by drafting Chase Claypool. Ju Ju is a former Pro bowler for a reason. James Washington took a step forward in 2019 even when the quarterback play took a drastic step back. James Washington made some key plays. He nearly tripled his yardage total, in 2018 it was 217, to 735 in 2019. He also nearly tripled his number of first downs gained, in 2018 it was 11, to 31 in 2019 per ProFootballReference. He showed the ability to make plays and extend drives when the Steelers needed him to. Diontae Johnson surprised a lot of people last season with a stellar year all things considered. As the third option on the depth chart he led the team in catches, with 59, and receiving touchdowns, with 5, per ESPN.

Tight ends

The Steelers made headlines signing Pro Bowl tight end Eric Ebron this offseason. His athleticism and ability to make a huge splash in the passing game will make him the starter. Ben hasn’t had a quality tight end that could still healthy for a full season since Heath Miller. We are likely going to see a lot from Ebron this year.
