Pittsburgh recently reunited with former safety and second-round draft choice, Sean Davis. Here’s why all Steelers fans should approve of this move.

The Steelers have had their share of issues at the safety position ever since Troy Polamalu retired. In an effort to fill the void, players they have drafted have ended up falling flat. Fortunately, the trade for Minkah Fitzpatrick has revamped the position entirely for Pittsburgh.

Still, Pittsburgh’s safety depth is concerning. Along with not knowing yet what we have in Terrell Edmunds, the Steelers had a terribly inexperienced group of safeties on their initial 53-man roster in 2020 with Jordan Dangerfield, Marcus Allen, and Curtis Riley.

Here are four reasons why all Steelers fans should be on board with the return of Sean Davis to the team in 2020:

Davis knows the Steelers system

Unlike Curtis Riley or Marcus Allen, Sean Davis knowns this system as well as any safety on the roster, as he’s logged 2,722 defensive snaps with the team in his first four seasons, according to Pro Football Reference. Davis has played under the direction of Keith Butler and while his stats were never through the roof, he knows how to cover multiple assignments.

Lots of starting experience

In addition to knowing the system, Davis has started 41 of a possible 48 games to start his NFL career. Last year, his season was derailed by an injury that landed him on IR. If that hadn’t happened, Davis was entering a contract year in hopes of earning a decent payday. With Marcus Allen and Jordan Dangerfield combining for just 3 career starts, Davis is a much more trustworthy option in a pinch.

Can play free safety and strong safety

What I’m most excited about with the return of Sean Davis is his versatility. While Allen and Dangerfield are best suited in the box and near the line of scrimmage, Davis has plenty of experience playing free safety and being the last line of defense.

If something were to happen to Minkah Fitzpatrick this year, I would feel much more comfortable with Davis sliding in at free safety rather than shuffling players around or trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. His versatility gives me a little more peace of mind if one of their safeties were to get injured.

The price is right

As of Monday morning, there hasn’t been word on what Sean Davis’s contract number will be for the Steelers, but more than likely it’s for the veteran minimum. Davis was already given a $2 million signing bonus by Washington this offseason, only to be released this season. For a player who potentially could have made low-level starting money prior to his injury in 2019, getting him back on a cheap deal is a no-brainer.

Sean Davis may never again become a starting safety in the league and taking him in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft wasn’t exactly a home run for Pittsburgh. Still, there is very little risk with this signing and we have seen some solid, reliable play from Davis in recent years. All Steelers fans should be on board with this.
