Most Blocked Punts single season: 6

The position of punter is an inglorious job at best. The punter has only one job to kick the ball as far down the field as possible and make the opposition drive the ball as far as possible. The Steelers have never had Hall had Fame punters, but most have been dependable.

They lost one such punter as the 1984 season ended. The Steelers found themselves looking to find a replacement for the reliable Craig Colquitt who, in six seasons with Pittsburgh, never had one blocked punt. The Steelers opted to use the draft to fill that void.

The Steelers then drafted Harry Newsome, a punter from Wake Forrest in the 8th round at the 214th overall pick. Although he punted for the Steelers from 1985-1989, by the time he left the Steelers, one could consider his selection one of the worst overall draft picks of all times. Thus, setting an NFL record in the process. One he probably wishes he did not hold.

Harry Newsome set this record in the 1988 season when he had a remarkable six blocked punts in one season. Had he just had one such season, that might be forgivable; any player can have a bad season. No, it got worse. He finished his career with 14 blocked punts; however, he shares this mark with Herman Weaver, who punted for the  Detroit Lions and Seattle Seahawks from 1970-1980. Of his 14  blocked punts, 12 came as a Steeler and only two as a Minnesota Viking.
