Cornerback

For years, the cornerback position was always one of the weakest groups on the Pittsburgh Steelers. Though they were never lacking in physicality, this isn’t an position where Mike Tomlin has typically invested a lot of draft capital.

Just four years ago, the Steelers top cornerbacks consisted of Ross Cockrell, William Gay, and Artie Burns. Now this group looks completely different.

Since 2017, Pittsburgh has beefed up this group with players like Joe Haden, Mike Hilton, and Cameron Sutton. Steven Nelson and Justin Layne are the most recent additions in the back end of the defense – making this one of the deepest groups of cornerbacks I’ve seen in my lifetime.

If Haden and Nelson can continue to play at a high level and young players like Sutton and Layne can take a step up, this group can help shut down even the most lethal offenses in the NFL this year.

The Steelers will no doubt face some rough patches, and these units may not always look good in every game. However, defensive line, wide receiver, and cornerback are currently the strengths of their team, and they should have an impact on Pittsburgh’s success in 2020.
