Can the secondary shape up

The Steelers secondary was one of the best in the NFL last season. Shutting down opponents’ top targets as well as forcing a lot of turnovers made this united one of the most feared in the NFL. Against the Giants, there were expectations that this unit would pick up right where it left off. However, the Steelers secondary proved to be the weakest unit on the field.

Now, this isn’t to say the secondary was bad. They were fine, but they didn’t play to the level from last year. Steven Nelson and Joe Haden struggled to cover deep threat Darius Slayton while Minkah Fitzpatrick was very quiet in his second Steelers season. All of this doesn’t mean the unit will flop this season, but they will need tighter performances if they want to stay competitive.

Ahead of this week’s matchup against the Broncos, the Steelers secondary will have to get back on the right track. Denver can hurt secondaries in a variety of ways with weapons at multiple different levels. If the Steelers enter the week sleeping, it could lead to an early loss during their Sunday night matchup.
