LB Todd Davis

As usual, Vince Williams has been solid against the run and has already made his presence felt as a blitzer. Unfortunatly, he’s a liability when it comes to defending the pass. According to Pro Football Focus, Williams has earned a pathetic 30.0 grade in pass coverage this year. As a result, his overall grade through two games is a dismal 37.0.

In today’s NFL, linebackers must be able to cover. With Mark Barron no longer with the team, Williams has been forced to play more snaps in the early going, and it has cost the Steelers in passing situations.

Todd Davis is currently considered to be a top 10 free agent available for the picking, according to NFL Trade Rumors. He spent the last four years starting for the Denver Broncos before failing to find a home before the start of the 2020 season.

While Davis isn’t exactly a coverage specialist, he’s more well-rounded than Williams and a better athlete at this point. Davis also has a nose for the football, as he recorded 134 tackles on just 85 percent of defensive snaps last year for the Broncos.

The Steelers apparently don’t trust Ulysees Gilbert enough at this point to let him see the field on defense. Perhaps Davis can be that bridge until Gilbert is ready to go. At the very least, he can get Williams off the field on third downs.
