WR Chase Claypool

We are just three games into Chase Claypool’s NFL career, but already we have seen some flashes of stardom from the big rookie. At 6’4” and 238 pounds, Claypool has an obvious size advantage over any defensive back in the league.

However, he’s not just a big, physical body. Claypool’s athleticism has shown up early and often in his first three games with the Steelers – as evidenced by his 25.2 yards per reception. The rookie out of Notre Dame clearly has the speed to burn down the field and the ability to make plays with the ball in his hands after the catch.

Though the raw numbers didn’t look good for Claypool against the Texans (1 reception on 4 targets for 24 receiving yards and a fumble), he actually played better than his numbers would indicate. Claypool drew a pass interference deep down the field that set Pittsburgh up for a score. He was also at the receiving end of a defensive pass interference that wasn’t called, as well as an uncatchable target.

Claypool will have to do some fine-tuning, but that is to be expected. With just 9 targets so far on the season, the Steelers need to find a way to get him more involved going forward.
