The Steelers have a decision to make when it comes to James Conner’s future with the team. Here’ why Pittsburgh shouldn’t even consider re-signing him.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have started the season 3-0 for the first time since 2010. Winning their next game against the Tennessee Titans would give them the best record they’ve posted in the first four weeks since 1979 when they began the year 4-0.

The defense has played some fantastic football over this stretch. Led by T.J. Watt, Pittsburgh is currently 2nd in yards allowed, 3rd in yards per play surrendered, and 5th in points per game. The Steelers front seven has been utterly dominant to start the season and is largely responsible for their early success.

However, their impressive defensive front isn’t the only positional group turning heads. While the Steelers may not have invested high in the running back position, they managed to open the season with three straight games with a 100-yard rusher – something that hasn’t been done since the days of Willie Parker.

James Conner has been the clear leader in the backfield so far. Though his first three contests, Conner has managed 224 yards on 40 carries (5.6 per carry) and has punched in two scores on the ground. In addition, Conner has caught 8 of 11 passes through the air for an additional 63 yards.

While these numbers appear impressive at first glance, it’s important not to be fooled by raw statistics. The Steelers top running back is going to need a new contract after the 2020 season, but Pittsburgh shouldn’t be the team to give him one.

Here are four reasons why the Steelers shouldn’t even consider re-signing James Conner after this year:
