Compensation required by the Steelers would be too rich

Sam Darnold hasn’t emerged into the star quarterback that everyone thought he could be at this point, and some of that might have to do with him playing under Adam Gase on the New York Jets. However, he’s still just 23 years old, and the Jets are going to want to be fairly compensated if they move him.

Obviously, putting him on the block is something that would not be out of the ordinary for the situation New York could find themselves in very soon. The Arizona Cardinals did the exact same thing in 2019. After drafting quarterback Josh Rosen in the first round just one year prior, Oklahoma quarterback, Kyler Murray fell into their lap with the number one overall pick the next year, and they couldn’t pass on him.

By all means, the Jets should do the same if they have a chance to nab Trevor Lawrence. Unfortunately, they won’t just be giving Darnold away. At the minimum, trading for Darnold would likely cost Pittsburgh a 2nd and 3rd round draft choice. Though Darnold is still very young, this seems like a lot for a player who hasn’t proven much in the league.
