LB Darron Lee

I remember when Darron Lee was talked about as potentially being the second coming of Ryan Shazier as he prepared to enter the 2016 NFL Draft. However, that didn’t turn out to be the case at all. Though Lee was an Ohio State product like Shazier and a thoroughly impressive athlete, he never really graded out well during his first four seasons in the league.

Still, there are pretty slim pickings when it comes to free agent linebackers and Lee could be a good player to spell Vince Williams of some snaps on passing downs. Though Lee doesn’t come without his share of mental lapses, he’s still a linebacker who can turn and run with his 4.47 speed.

In 2018, Lee started all 12 of the games he played in for the New York Jets and recorded 3 interceptions, 5 pass defenses, and a defensive touchdown. He’s far from perfect in any facet of the game, but he would be an upgrade in coverage downs over Vince Williams, and the team apparently isn’t ready to trust Ulysees Gilbert on defense just yet.

These five players aren’t exactly superstars at this point who can afford to negotiate their own contracts or pick their landing spot. At this point, Pittsburgh would be able to sign any of them to a very reasonable deal. By doing so, they may be able to fill some holes and slightly improve their chances at a Super Bowl run this year.
