Kevin Dotson stepped in again for David DeCastro

Kevin Dotson is a rookie, but he is doing exactly what the Steelers want him to do in his rookie year. He is stepping in for the twice injured David DeCastro and holding the job down.

What was special about the game against the Eagles was that he matched up against Eagles star defensive tackle, Fletcher Cox. Dotson has been average, but that’s all I want from a rookie who was a mid-round pick.

Dotson was a nice find, especially being on the same line at Louisiana as Robert Hunt. The Steelers identified a low-profile guy, and now they have a guard of the future.

I could see as early as next year that he gets a starting role. He will be asked to fill in for David DeCastro as a rookie but more could be in store.

One of my worries is that the Steelers won’t be able to resign Matt Feiler. Fieler has shown that he is a good starting guard in the NFL. Feiler is a free agent at the end of the year and he could very well be attractive for another team. That would open the door for Dotson to take over at left guard.

There is another door open for Dotson. DeCastro will be a free agent after 2021 and is on the wrong side of 30. The Steelers surely love having DeCastro, but it might be time for the Steelers to move to a younger option. Many options are on the table for Dotson.

Conclusion

The Black & Gold had some more encouraging signs and now the Black & Gold will host the Browns on Sunday. This is a big division showdown that will show what kind of team the Steelers are.

The Steelers injury situation looks okay as DeCastro will be missed but Dotson can fill in for him. We also saw Claypool step up big for the injured Diontae Johnson. I would actually like the Steelers to ease those guys back but also hope neither injury is too serious.

Mike Tomlin’s team is 4-0 and that is exactly where this team wants to be this time of year. The Browns look good against the Colts; so, the Steelers will have their hands full.
