Loser: The CBs

While this duo had two interceptions and a sack, those numbers proved to be very misleading. Steven Nelson and Mike Hilton struggled on Sunday to cover, and it was the biggest reason that the Steelers almost lost what should have been a blowout. Starting first with Nelson, he has suffered an unfortunate regression so far this year. He is far from the player he was last year, and fans should be questioning if he will still be on the roster a year from now.

It’s hard to be mad over two interceptions, but neither were particularly amazing (the first one was much more quality than the second one to be fair). While some of his struggles are likely due to having an equally regressed Minkah Fitzpatrick (more on him later), it still doesn’t excuse his three passing scores Nelson has given up this season when he was credited for none last year). He is becoming a weak target in the passing game, and it could get ugly for him when he faces a better passing offense.

As for Hilton, he had a solid day as a run defender and blitzer as he added another sack to his resume, but he was clearly mismatched against Travis Fulgham. Part of this is a size issue, as Hilton is 5’9 compared to Fulgham’s 6’2, but great players still overcome that issue. Hilton showed his flaws in coverage, and while he should still be regarded as one of the best slot corners in the league, he obviously struggled today. The secondary as a whole struggled, but these two corners need to get their woes fixed.
