A lot of talk has been surrounding Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster’s contract situation after 2020.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have been a wide receiver gold mine over the last few years. Since 2009, the Steelers have drafted more talented wide receivers than any other team in the NFL. The list of wide receivers Pittsburgh has drafted since 2009 include, Mike Wallace, Antonio Brown, Emmanuel Sanders, Martavis Bryant, Sammie Coates, Demarcus Ayers, Justin Brown, Toney Clemons, Markus Wheaton, JuJu Smith-Schuster, James Washington, Diontae Johnson, and Chase Claypool. The fact that the Steelers have drafted 13 wide receivers in 11 years while seeing 9 of them give significant production really shows the ability of Kevin Colbert and Mike Tomlin to draft pass catchers.

That being said there has been a consistent issue with the Steelers draft picks at wide receiver. They have either been too good for the Steelers to afford past their rookie contracts, had too many off the field issues to overcome, or have just not been worth keeping. The wide receiver position is a position that sees more players moving around than most in the NFL. There are so many talented pass catchers a lot of teams would rather keep drafting than pay serious money for a single missing piece in their receiving group.

We saw Antonio Brown go crazy and bounce himself out of the league, drawing charges, freezing his own feet, and holding out because of the style of helmet he was allowed to wear. Martavis Bryant could not get over a drug problem. Mike Wallace, Emmanuel Sanders, Markus Wheaton, and even Sammie Coates left for teams that were willing to pay more for their services. The Steelers have lost so much talent due to various circumstances in the receiving group that was really beyond their control. Yet, the fact they have been able to replace such production has been nothing short of remarkable.

With JuJu Smith-Schuster not putting up monstrous stats, and seeing Diontae Johnson and Chase Claypool have such success, people are starting to question whether he would be worth resigning after the 2020 season. The answer is really a very easy yes. The Steelers should absolutely resign JuJu Smith-Schuster provided that he continues to maintain health and fantastic leadership qualities. Here is why.
