4 questions Steelers LB Robert Spillane must answer vs. Titans
By Tommy Jaggi
How will Spillane do calling the plays?
It doesn’t happen very often where a player like Robert Spillane would ever be in the position to wear the green dot and call the defensive plays from the sideline. Just before the start of the season, many fans expected Ulysees Gilbert to be the next man up for Devin Bush.
While Gilbert will no doubt have an increased role with Bush gone for the year, Spillane is now the man in charge of Pittsburgh’s defense. But it’s crazy to think that with 10-year veterans like Cameron Heyward and Joe Haden, it would be Spillane calling the shots.
This is the primary role of the Mack linebacker in Pittsburgh’s defense, and nothing has been confirmed to this point, but this responsibility very well could rely on Spillane. Unfortunately, the third-year linebacker doesn’t have a single start under his belt, so we hope this goes over smoothly.
If all goes well, there will be no confusion or miscommunication between Spillane and Keith Butler from the sideline. The Steelers defense has been terrific this year, and Robert Spillane will need to prove that this can be a smooth transition.
