Can Spillane be an every-down linebacker?

Perhaps above all else, Steelers fans will want to know whether or not Robert Spillane can be an every-down defender for them – something Bush has been all year. Before suffering a torn ACL against the Browns, Devin Bush rarely left the field, and he proved to be a solid option as both a blitzer and run defender, as well as in coverage.

It still remains to be seen if the Steelers will even give Spillane the chance to stay on the field in passing situations or if they will pass the buck to someone else from their nickel and dime packages. If the young linebacker does stay on the field, he will need to showcase the ability to execute his assignments in all facets of the game.

The Steelers don’t have a lot tied into Spillane, and the moment he really starts to struggle, Pittsburgh could potentially pull the plug and put in someone else.

Spillane is going to have an incredibly difficult task ahead of him against the team that initially signed him after the 2018 NFL Draft. If he answers these questions, it could give us all a boost of confidence moving forward. If not, perhaps the Steelers could be in the market for another linebacker before the trade deadline.
