Kevin Dotson: Pass-block grade

Current grade: 88.7

League rank: 1st

This is not a statistic that I can prorate to see what it would be at the end of the season, but rookie offensive guard, Kevin Dotson, could not be any more impressive than what he has been so far – and I mean that quite literally.

Though he played his college ball at Louisiana Lafayette, Dotson was snubbed of an NFL Combine invite. As a result, the big offensive lineman dropped all the way down to the fourth round for the Steelers to snatch up. Though the barrel-chested wrecking ball was known primarily as a gritty run blocker in college, it’s Dotson’s pass protection that has been the most impressive thus far.

Despite being thrust into NFL action early in his rookie season, Dotson has been terrific at giving Ben Roethlisberger time in the pocket. According to Pro Football Focus, he has earned a pass-blocking grade of 88.7 – good first 1st in the league among all offensive guards.

While Dotson is going to take a back seat with the return of former All-Pro David DeCastro to the starting lineup, he has shown more than enough reason why the Steelers will trust him as a long-time starter down the road. Dotson has been truly impressive.
