Loser: Chase Claypool

While it was natural that Chase Claypool would come back to earth, it was hard to see him put up a mediocre statistical game this week. He only caught one pass and gained negative yards, evidence of the struggles he had on the day. Like Haden, this doesn’t offset the amazing start to the year he has had, but it was concerning to see him used so little this week.

That said, his struggles aided the other receivers, as he took on some more double coverage than he had seen previously. As well, he wasn’t targeted often, making his lowly stats more palpable. Still, he didn’t do much with the ball on his lone opportunity. While this shouldn’t deter his development, it certainly wasn’t ideal to see such a bad output from the rookie.

Going forward, Claypool will have to adapt to seeing heavier coverages on him due to his natural talent. In order to be an elite receiver, he will have to know how to personally counter these looks and still produce. As well, the Steelers receiving room is crowded, so it makes sense that he may not see the top targets every week. Despite all this, it was discouraging to see his lone attempt on the day be so disappointing.
