Winner: Robert Spillane

Another player that arguably could have been both a winner and a loser in this matchup was Robert Spillane. That said, his positive plays outweighed his negative ones. For starters, his early-game pick-six gave the team an early lead and was the only points the Steelers scored in the first half. On top of this, he was vital in making a couple of other run stops later in the game, continuing the impressive season he is having.

Yes, he did struggle early in the game on some of the long runs and in the passing game, but for a former special teamer turned starter, he held his own against a dynamic offense. While his role may need to shift more to what Vince Williams does in the future, as for now he is doing well enough replacing Devin Bush. The fact that he hasn’t been a liability is a telling sign that the Steelers may have found something special in Spillane.

Moving forward, the Steelers should continue to be fielding Spillane in his role and allow him to work through his issues. Again, he shouldn’t be seen as a true Mack replacement for Bush, but as a potential Buck replacement for Williams in the future. The Steelers have unearthed a gem here, and his play this week may have had a few blips, but he was one of the bright spots for the team’s defense this week.
