3 players the Pittsburgh Steelers wish they still had on their roster
He was a budding star for the Steelers and the centerpiece to our defense
I will never forget how I felt the moment I saw him unable to get off the ground. I was crushed, and it wasn’t because of what it meant for the Steelers on the field. It was because of what it would mean for this man off the field. He went from being the star player, and one of the best linebacker in the world, to being unable to walk. I can’t imagine going from being such an athletic and physical marvel to be unable to do what he normally could. With that being said his recovery was one of the best things I have ever seen. I am very happy that he has been able to regain a lot of normalcy in life and I wish him nothing but the best in whatever career path he takes, although my gut tells me it will have something to do with scouting or coaching.
I am holding out hope that he makes his way back to Pittsburgh again as a coach or scout. Even if he doesn’t I’ll be happy for one of my favorite players. He was an unstoppable presence that was always the guy making a huge play when the game was on the line. He was so fast, I won’t forget him beating the Steelers wide receivers in a foot race. He was incredibly physical and his coverage skills were really starting to develop in his final season.
Robert Spillane has filled in valiantly for Devin Bush. However, neither Spillane nor Bush are at the level Shazier was at before his injury. There would be no more questions about the Steelers ineffectiveness against the run recently. There would be no questions about the linebackers being able to cover tight ends. We could put Shazier on some wide receivers and he would get the job done. I can’t imagine where his ceiling was, but I knew he was on the track to be a perennial All-pro player in the NFL for years to come.
I stand by this list in that the Steelers could absolutely use another starting tackle for the future. They have shown that they would like more consistency from their punter. They even traded for another inside linebacker right before the deadline because of Bush’s injury. If the Steelers still had all 3 of these players, they would not be looking for more players in the positions they have been tending to throughout this season.
