What should the Steelers do?

This is a very difficult question and the answers vary, depending on the circumstances that play out. We know that it won’t be long now before Ben Roethlisberger calls it quits, but when exactly that time will come, we don’t know. Even though Ben has just one year remaining on his contract, it’s not out of the realm of possibility that he could sign a short extension with the team after the season in an effort for Pittsburgh to free up some money right away.

If Roethlisberger does leave soon, however, it would make sense to start grooming his replacement. The 2021 NFL Draft looks to have at least four capable quarterbacks who will be worth a first-round selection this year, and potentially trading up for a player like Zach Wilson or Trey Lance could set the Steelers up for success for years. However, draft capital certainly comes into play.

In a year where the salary cap is going to be very tight, I would wager that Pittsburgh will do what they can to bolster their roster this offseason and put off looking for their future quarterback for at least one more season.

At this point in time, there isn’t necessarily a right or wrong answer here, but the choices the Steelers make this April could shape their team in both the immediate and long-term future. Kevin Colbert and his crew have a difficult decision on their hands.
