CB Steven Nelson

This isn’t a name that I thought we would see as a potential cap casualty just two years after signing his deal with the Steelers, but here we are. Steven Nelson has been just alright for Pittsburgh this year – which is disappointing considering how good he was in his first season with the team in 2019.

According to Pro Football Reference, Nelson has already allowed 569 yards and 6 touchdowns on the season. Last year in 15 games, he allowed only 491 yards and 0 touchdowns. Nelson has clearly come back down to earth, and he could pay the price for his drop off in play this year. Nelson is due over $14.4 million next season thanks to a back-loaded contract and the Steelers could save $8.25 million if they let him go in the offseason.

With his subpar play in 2020, this seems like an obvious choice to get under the cap next year. Nelson will really have to step up his game to make Pittsburgh reconsider.

Overall, there are several other players who could get the ax next offseason as the Steelers are forced to get under the cap, but parting ways with these four players makes sense to an extent. While they won’t likely get rid of their top two tight ends and top two cornerbacks in the same offseason, a combination of one from each position could be gone before the 2021 season.
