QB Ben Roethlisberger

Who could possibly be upset with the way Ben Roethlisberger is playing in 2020? While he certainly doesn’t look like young Big Ben with his struggles to throw the ball down the field in recent years, there are many things that he’s actually improved on in his old age. Roethlisberger has been a good decision-maker in 2020. As a result, he has thrown for 24 touchdowns as opposed to just 5 interceptions on the season.

But despite outperforming expectations in 2020, it’s really hard to justify paying him the highest salary in the league. According to Over the Cap, the Steelers are set to take a $41.25 million cap in the final season of Roethlisberger’s contract in 2021. This is an insane amount of money for anyone not considered among the very best quarterbacks ins the league.

While Ben has been solid this year, he’s no Patrick Mahomes or Russell Wilson, and it’s really hard to justify that type of money. However, the quarterback is one position you always make an exception for and you can’t win without a competent signal-caller. Still, that doesn’t mean that Roethlisberger isn’t going to be overpaid next year.

It’s quite possible that the Steelers will try to make moves to soften the blow of these cap hits next year, and some players could be extended, restructured, or possibly even cut before the season. Each of these players used to be stars on Pittsburgh, but at this point, they are all being overpaid.
