Steelers @ Dolphins: 2004 Week 3 (Hurricane Jeanne)

What a way to make a debut in hurricane-like conditions. In the career of Ben Roethlisberger, this was his first game as a starter replacing Tommy Maddox as he suffered a leg injury the week prior. Those who follow the weather and are Floridians, you are more susceptible to be hit by hurricanes based on location and 2004 was a bad year having 4 major hurricanes (sustained winds at 115 mph or above) hitting the Sunshine State at both East and West coasts respectively.

I won’t go much into detail on how the storms affected football games because we all know, but the 4th to hit Florida, especially this time in South Florida forced the game to be pushed back at the evening slot to allow most of the worst weather to be scooted up north allowing the conditions to ease a bit to play the game. Ben had a decent showing, but it was the defense that stopped the Dolphins into their tracts just allowing a field-goal in the game; the Steelers won 13 – 3. Three years later, there was another rainy game that took place between the two teams on Monday Night Football, but it happened that time in Pittsburgh, though you just need your kicker to be the unsung hero.

The turf at Heinz Field was just as bad as conditions are at Soldier Field in Chicago and at Lambeau Field in Green Bay. Jeff Reed made the lonely field-goal and the Steelers just won 3-0 (the lowest score in Steelers history).
