How to fix the Steelers injury problems

First, the Steelers need to address the injury problem they have on their defense. Knowing Robert Spillane will return and that he will miss about one or two games. What do they do? They need to make two phone calls. The first one is to Clay Matthews, and the second one is to Terrell Suggs.

Neither are playing in the NFL at the moment; both are linebackers. They give the Steelers a short term answer to a short term problem. Right now, the Steelers’ primary focus is not 2021.  They need to ensure they win the next seven games: four regular-season games, two playoff games, and the Superbowl. When you have injuries to starters and injuries mount to the replacements, you ultimately have to find replacements. In this case, you do not need long term replacements. Only players, you can bring in for the duration of the 2020 season.

Clay Matthews is only 34 years old. In football terms, he is not young. However, one would assume for seven games, and with the additional talent the Steelers have on their defensive squad, he can certainly help. With six career interceptions and 91.5 sacks on his resume and six pro bowls. Why not sign him. He adds an extra body to the linebacker corps, and you get an extra edge rusher to help pressure the quarterback. Face it, that is something they lost when Dupree tore his ACL.

If the Steelers can not pressure the quarterback, especially one like Mahomes, they will get picked apart slowly. Add the fact that the offense goes three and out with no running game; they do not want to give Mahomes extra possessions. Signing Clay Matthews might not ultimately solve this problem, but it certainly would not hurt either. The only reason you would make this move is to win the championship. Certainly, one would think with a seventh Lombardi trophy on the line; you do what it takes.

The next player they call is Terrell Suggs. Why him? Well, the short answer is despite how much Steelers fans have come to hate him over all the years he played with the Ravens and fans can’t deny that he makes things happen. Sure there are those fans that thought and perhaps still think he was nothing less than a thug. Ok, a valid critique. Nonetheless, Suggs, a former 1st round draft choice,  has played in seven Pro Bowls; he has 139 sacks, seven interceptions, 37 forced fumbles, 15 fumble recoveries, 630 solo tackles, and 895 combined tackles. Plus, he is 6’3” and 265 pounds. Not a small guy. He can play linebacker and or defensive end. He comes with a fair amount of versatility. Like Devin Bush, Suggs is the type of player that just makes things happen. Plus, if you sign him; you would hear all the moaning and groaning from Ravens fans clean into Pittsburgh. How often do the Steelers get to not only beat the Ravens twice in one season and then get to rub salt in the wound after? If for that reason alone, they should sign him.
