Fourth player that should not return

I like Josh Dobbs and I think in a few years he could be a very great young coach if he chose to be. He is the guy on the sidelines with the clipboard even when he isn’t dressing. More importantly, if Matt Canada does start taking over playcalling duties and impresses, then he will be in line for a promotion.

I don’t mind Fichtner, but I don’t see him as a viable option as an offensive coordinator in the future. I would not be surprised to see Canada take over as the offensive coordinator in the next year or two, and if Dobbs takes a similar career path as Kellen Moore of the Cowboys he could end his playing career in favor of a job as a quarterback coach. I’m not saying this will happen, yet Dobbs’ knowledge in the game of football even as young as he is, is very impressive.

Aside from me dreaming of him as the quarterback coach for the Steelers, he is not the quarterback of the future. Pittsburgh has shown no interest in letting him compete to be Ben’s successor. With so many question marks around Mason Rudolph, It would be wise to open up a spot in the QB room for a possible rookie selection in 2021. Dobbs is set to be a free agent anyway and the Steelers likely won’t sign him again as they have Devlin Hodges waiting on the practice squad if a 3rd quarterback is needed. At the current pace, Rudolph looks more ready for a Landry Jones type career than being a franchise quarterback.

There isn’t a ton wrong with any of these players at their current positions. Some have failed to impress and find themselves lower on the depth chart than one may have predicted when they were originally added to the roster. With cap being a huge issue, guys like Mike Hilton and James Conner won’t be back. 7 million is too much to pay for a second tight end unless your base offense consists of 2 tight ends and some players just find their time ending with an organization due to the trajectory of their careers. It isn’t to take away from their efforts, but they shouldn’t return to the black and gold in 2021.
