The Steelers will have major cap problems once this season concludes and hard decisions will have to be made going forward.

Talented players come and go as the NFL’s salary cap causes teams to make tough decisions. Players that are fan favorites like Bud Dupree, Mike Hilton, Cam Sutton, and Juju Smith-Schuster are free agents and major factors on this team. Other players will have to be shown the door for the Steelers to get under that cap number which is expected to drop once the season concludes.

The league is making less money since the Covid pandemic happened and fans have not been able to attend games. The NFL has not gained enough money to keep the cap the same or increase it. Instead, it will decrease and that is really bad news for contending teams and that includes the Steelers. Some moves can be made to alleviate cap issues like signing Ben Roethlisberger to a contract extension and reworking some other deals.

Other moves will need to happen though which may upset fans. Moves like cutting players that will make a lot of money that Pittsburgh can’t afford or letting free agents walk when this season is over. Seeing some players leave is harder than others but it is a necessary evil for Kevin Colbert and his crew to put the best team on the field when the 2021 team hits the grass.
