Mayfield cracks under the pressure

In last week’s bold predictions, I gave the Browns and Baker Mayfield a lot of credit. When the rushing attack was getting predictable, the team opted to turn to Mayfield throwing the ball early and often despite the struggles he has had, specifically with turnover. The risk paid off though, the Browns suddenly had an even more explosive offense than before, and it showed some smart play-calling from their offensive coordinator (something the Steelers should envy).

That said, there is an enormous amount of pressure riding on Mayfield and the Browns this week, as this is their first playoff game in 17 years. To be frank, I think he cracks under this pressure and ends up costing the Browns the game. While the first drive he looks sharp, he can never seem to get a good drive going for himself again.

In total, he has less than 200 total yards and one passing score to two interceptions. The second interception comes at a brutal time, as with the Steelers storming back from an early deficit in the fourth, Mayfield throws an errant pass under pressure is picked off in the red zone by a returning Robert Spillane. While I think Mayfield is a good player and his progression this season has been solid, I think he struggles heavily in his first playoff game.
