3 greatest draft selections in Steelers franchise history
“Mean” Joe Greene, DT, NFL Draft 1969/ Round: 1/ Pick: 4
This draft choice was the biggest turning point for the franchise. Ever since it was created in 1933, the Steelers were never that good. They would have some successful seasons here and there but they were a joke to many. Chuck Noll was just hired and his first pick was a big man from a small school in Texas. The news outlets found it to be an appalling pick and one that would not work out. The thought process was this was a reach and the team would continue to stink moving forward. What they didn’t know was who Pittsburgh just got.
Joe Greene was one of the most ferocious and feared players to ever play in the league. He commanded respect as he dominated in the NFL. His tenacity and will to win were infectious for the black and gold. He hated to lose like most athletes but he would make sure his team gave everything they had. His personality allowed the team to grow and become the best in the 70s and beyond. He is the best Steelers player of all time and no one will argue that. Greene is a Hall of Fame player for a reason but he means so much more to this city. He changed this team from a joke to a powerhouse and created a storied defense that is continuing today.
The Steelers have chosen many amazing players throughout their history. Some of those players are franchise-altering like the three listed above.
