Round 4:

Gabriel Davis, WR

Original pick: Anthony McFarland, RB

Here is the sole reason as to why the Steelers could afford to not take Claypool in the second round of the draft. While Gabriel Davis is a clear stepdown from Claypool, Gibson is a major upgrade from McFarland. To his credit, Davis seems to be a star on the rise in the NFL, and he serves a similar role as a deep threat for the team.

Davis put together just under 600 yards receiving on the year despite the Bills having a plethora of talent at the receiver position. As well, he had a nose for the end zone with seven scores. He could serve the exact same role that Claypool did in his rookie year. While he is smaller than Claypool, he still has great size at 6’2. Going forward, he would fill in admirably for the team.

Again, Claypool has the higher ceiling and had the better rookie year, but that doesn’t mean Davis is a bad player. With the Steelers having an already deep receiving group, Davis would have seen less playing time overall but should still have been an effective player. Davis would be a fine replacement for Claypool while also allowing the team to get a better player at running back.
