Round 4:

Michael Onwenu, OL

Original pick: Kevin Dotson, IOL

Kevin Dotson was arguably the Steelers best offensive lineman this season. He did this despite only starting a limited number of games for the team. While his future is bright, there was a better offensive lineman taken about a round later. The Patriots seemingly got a steal in Michael Onwenu, as the Michigan lineman was one of the highest-graded rookies from the class.

While his play alone was great, his value is boosted due to his versatility along the line. Onwenu played primarily along the inside, but he also kicked out to tackle on occasion. It seemingly didn’t matter where he played though, as he performed well regardless. While Dotson looked solid, Onwenu looks like the superior player as well as the far more versatile player.

Had the Steelers opted for Onwenu, they could have had a potential right tackle candidate to go along with a future starting guard. That versatility is what makes him the choice over Dotson at this stage. Both were similarly graded players when kicked inside, but the option at playing him at tackle is a boost. Dotson wasn’t a bad pick, far from it, but there was a superior player available in Onwenu.
