Major drop in play late in 2020 season

Big Ben’s drastic drop in play late in the season has to be something that is on Kevin Colbert’s mind. If the money wasn’t enough to convince them not to bring Roethlisberger back, this could be. Ben finished the season with a 1-4 record (including the playoffs) and his offense scored under 20 points per game over their last 6 contests.

In addition, advanced analytics from PlayerProfiler.com showed that Roethlisberger was one of the least efficient quarterbacks in the league in 2020, and there were a number of stats that were more than concerning. The Steelers quarterback finished the year 32nd in yards per attempt, 34th in red zone completion percentage, 31st in deep-ball completion percentage, 33rd in clean pocket completion percentage, and 22nd in total QBR. Considering there are only 32 starting quarterbacks in the league, these numbers are quite pathetic.

In 2021, there is even less reason to believe he will improve on these numbers. Now pushing 40 years old and with the Steelers set to lose potentially one-fourth of their roster this offseason, Roethlisberger should continue to digress. Even if his play doesn’t drop off, he may not even be good enough to be a starter at his point. This should have an impact on Pittsburgh’s decision to keep him.
