4 reasons Steelers should trade for Raiders QB Derek Carr
By Tommy Jaggi
The upgrade in tools at the position would be significant for Steelers
I mean no disrespect to Ben Roethlisberger when I say that he just doesn’t have it anymore. Once one of the best quarterbacks outside of the pocket with an absolute cannon down the field, we must come to grips that Big Ben is no longer that player anymore.
Derek Carr may not be Roethlisberger in his prime, but he offers a significant boost in tools at the quarterback position. Carr is known for his running ability, but he is a very good athlete who is terrific at maneuvering in the pocket. He also has the ability to escape the pocket and extend the play when need be. In addition, Carr still has an excellent arm and the velocity to push the ball down into tight windows down the field.
Though the Steelers have to retool their offensive line, we have seen that Ben just can’t make plays with his legs to avoid pressure at this stage of his career. Carr would provide an instant upgrade in tools and give Pittsburgh a passer who can routinely make plays at every level of the field.
Carr isn’t considered one of the best quarterbacks in the league, but his performance over the past two years is starting to turn heads. At the very least, he would be a significant upgrade over an aging Ben Roethlisberger and would give the Steelers a chance to stay on top and compete for Super Bowls in the years to come.
