Vince Williams

Vince Williams has been proving his doubters wrong ever since he was drafted by the team in 2013. He went from sixth-round pick to 11 game starter, to back up, before finally becoming a full-time starter in 2017. While he had an off-year in 2019, he has consistently been one of the team’s best run stoppers on the defense.

Unfortunately, being a run stopper may not be enough to avoid cutting him and saving 4 million dollars. This would certainly be a blow to the team, as the depth chart at the inside linebacker position isn’t exactly deep. As well, he is one of the best two-down linebackers in the league when he has a decent running mate. This was evident earlier this season, as Williams was playing all over the field.

Ultimately, that cap number may prove to be too high for the Steelers and they will have to part ways with Williams. That said, if his market isn’t too hot, he could return to the team on a team-friendly deal. Besides the point though, the team may be forced to make a tough decision with Williams. It will be hard to lose such a vocal piece to the defense, but the lack of cap space may force the team’s hand.
