J.J. Watt has just been released by the Houston Texans. Here’s why the Steelers are among many suitors for the future Hall of Famer.

J.J. Watt is still one of the most dynamic defensive players in the NFL. There is little doubt that he can still get paid the big bucks on the open market. His name alone and ability to help a franchise on and off the field will lure teams in more. Watt has dipped in his production in the last two seasons but that seems more of an injury issue than his ability. The Steelers will likely at least put a call in to see if the third Watt brother would like to take the trio to Pittsburgh.

A team may pay him what he could’ve made at Houston this season, which was over 17 million. Watt instead asked for his release after trade speculation occurred. The franchise granted his wish and was released on Friday. He will now be looking for a new home after a great run for the Texans as he became the face of that city for many years.

Some honorable mentions for teams that might make a run for Watt include the Tennessee Titans, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Baltimore Ravens, LA Chargers, and New England Patriots. All of these teams could use some help getting after the passer and adding Watt would be a huge addition to their team. Watt should have many teams pursuing him but it will be interesting to see what he desires more, to be closer to family, or focus on his career.
